Welcome to the World, Baby Mia

When my niece Isabelle was born, my heart filled with so much love I thought it was going to explode. Every time I saw my niece I’d fall even more in love — from her first smile, to her first giggle, to her first step, to her first word, I got to see it all. Izzy and I have a special bond one that I hope continues to grow as she gets older. To be honest, with Izzy in my life things seemed complete, I wasn’t sure I had enough room in my heart to love anyone else. But two years and twenty days later I was proved wrong.

This is Mia, my second niece. One look at her and it turns out that my heart can love even more. I’m excited to watch Mia grow up and see how similar or different she is from her big sister Izzy. Although I’d be just as happy with a nephew, I’m happy that Isabelle has a sister. Having an older sister is a gift, you have an automatic best friend, mentor, and protector. I’m two years and two months younger than my sister and without her in my life I don’t know who or what I would’ve become.

“Sister. She is your mirror, shining back at you with a world of possibilities. She is your witness, who sees you at your worst and best, and loves you anyway. She is your partner in crime, your midnight companion, someone who knows when you are smiling, even in the dark. She is your teacher, your defense attorney, your personal press agent, even your shrink. Some days, she’s the reason you wish you were an only child.”

Long Weekend Loving

Long weekends in the summer are perfect for spending time in the sunshine, reading, and partying. This weekend we celebrated Isabelle’s second birthday and attended my aunt’s wedding. Both were lovely affairs filled with laughter, love, and drinks. I cannot believe that my niece is already two-years-old. She has such and incredibly demanding personality that oozes with charisma. She’s funny and loves to make people laugh. She obsesses over music, dancing, and movies. She enjoys my stories about Princess Isabelle and her best friend Waffles. Her smile is infectious, her memory incredible.

As I watched her interact with her cousins I saw how shy she really is, how much fun she has on her own and with others. I held her hand as we stepped into the the kiddy pool and wondered when she’d get to old (or too cool) to hold her Tia’s hand. I thought about how much she’s grown in a mere two years and couldn’t help but wonder who she will become. Then I snapped myself back to the present because she’s only two and time goes by too fast to keep thinking about the future.

“Summer was our best season: it was sleeping on the back screened porch in cots, or trying to sleep in the treehouse; summer was everything good to eat; it was a thousand colors in a parched landscape…”

frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn

Just for Fun, Lifestyle/Personal

I went for a pedicure with my bestie last night — my tootsies were in dire need of it, and really is there a better way to spend $20 (other than on books)? We always use pedicures for serious gab-fests that start off with, So Vanessa, how are you really feeling? My answer nearly shocked the poop out of my bestie, I’m good, feeling relaxed. Never has she ever heard me say that I’m feeling relaxxxxxeeeeedddddd — especially when things aren’t going my way. Why am I feeling so relaxed?

e403472c2554bd9d1eea706760a6a2d7I don’t give a damn about anything that doesn’t directly affect me. I no longer care about the little things and I’m learning to let go of situations and people who I can’t control. I’m being honest with myself for the first time in forever and frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn what anyone thinks!

The other day I went for a jog, I looked up at the clear blue sky and had to stop moving. I just stood there and stared, it looked as crisp as the ocean, and I wanted to jump in. It was the most beautiful sky I have ever seen, I felt so big and so small, and ready to take on the world. There are so many beautiful sights to behold and I just want to see them all. The only way to appreciate them is to be calm, cool, collected, and relaxed. I look at photos of my niece sometimes and the look in her eyes is the epitome of curiosity and excitement.

She is literally experiencing everything for the first time and you can tell that she is in love with life. She inspires me every single day to look at things differently. To learn, to grow, and to love life, because before we even know anything about anything that is what we are programmed to do.

Baby Belle's Baptism

Sunday afternoon we celebrated the Baptism of my niece (and now God daughter ) Isabelle. Dressed in an ivory knit sweater, a flower headpiece, and tiny flats with a rhinestone strap, Isabelle looked like an innocent little doll. Her smile is infectious and melts me to my very core – Godmother or not, this child makes me happier than I’ve ever been. The moment she recognizes me, the second she reaches for my face (normally my big squared glasses) everything else fades away. It’s just me and baby Izzy and I love her more than she’ll ever understand.

After an intimate little ceremony and a hectic day, we headed over to Fabbrica for a delicious luncheon. I absolutely love Fabbrica — last year Alex and I went there for Winterlicious and really enjoyed ourselves. We sat at a long rustic table, surrounded by colourful flowers, and homemade cookies. Somewhere between mouth-watering pizzas, a delicious beet and goat cheese salad, pillows of ricotta gnocchi, and a few glasses of wine, my sister and brother-in-law handed me a lovely gift. With it came the sweetest card I have ever read, a card that I will cherish. In it they told me why they chose me to be Izzy’s Godmother and I truly hope that I live up to everything they wish for.

To me, being a Godmother is about being there for Izzy when she goes through anything that she feels she can’t talk to her parents about. It’s about being her friend and teaching her things that maybe no one else can. I look at my own Godparents and I hope to be all of that and even more for Isabelle.

Thank you for everything, Jessica and Richard, I am so honoured to have been such a big part of this special day. Thank you to all of the wonderful staff at Fabbrica for making Izzy’s Baptism beautiful, comfortable, and delicious. Oh, and Tia Mary — the flowers were beautiful!!
